Syllabus Statement

Creating an effective World Wide Web presence for communication, information and interaction involves more than just web design and online writing: a web presence must also be managed and maintained. In this unit you will develop a conceptual basis for understanding web presence in terms of information ecology. You will then look in detail at the skills and knowledge necessary to make your web presence visible, useful, valuable and effective. You will learn about the ongoing management of content across a range of different online formats, especially where several people are involved in content production


At the end of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Analyse the interrelationship of Internet use and technology, and design and content
  2. Demonstrate understanding of the underlying concepts relating to the visibility and value of web presence
  3. Develop and coordinate the provision, moderation and organisation of the content of a web presence
  4. Analyse the World Wide Web as an example of information ecology

1hr lecture/whole-group activity; 1hr f2f tute (16 students / tute), 1 hr f2f lab (16 students/lab)
